Mesothelioma treatment seminar scheduled for May 2011

The Pacific Meso Center (PMC) at The Pacific Heart, Lung, & Blood Institute will help sponsor a UCLA Seminar on Lung-Sparing Therapies for Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the protective lining of the lungs caused almost exclusively by prolonged asbestos exposure. Lung cancer and other types of mesothelioma that affect the lining of the heart, chest and abdomen are also commonly caused by asbestos. This seminar will be the first of its kind to feature mesothelioma treatment that preserves the lung.
The one-day seminar is slated for Saturday, May 21st at the Sheraton Delfina in Santa Monica, California from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event will be hosted by long-time advocate for lung-sparing surgery Dr. Robert B. Cameron, Director of the Mesothelioma Research Program at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the West Los Angeles Veterans' Administration Medical Center.
The international faculty attending include Tom Treasure, MD, and David A. Waller, MD, from Great Britain, who will discuss the results recently announced by the Mesothelioma and Radical Surgery (MARS) Trail conducted in the UK. Experts in the fields ofmesothelioma surgery, radiation, chemotherapy and pulmonary medicine will also be in attendance.
The seminar is designed for physicians in need of the continuing medical education (CME) credit. However, mesothelioma patients, families, students, and other interested parties are welcome to attend for a low fee.
